Planning a model train layout should also take into account the possibility for operating the trains as if they were part of a real railroad. By taking into account the various industries along your model railroad, you can build a track plan that is not only great looking, but also fun to play with as well.
Here is a look at an alternative model train layout track plan I am developing for my Whiskey Gap HO Scale model railroad. This design is larger than the previous version and gives more opportunities for operations.

This video shows an amazing-looking model train layout of a Santa Fe short line in the 1950s. The scenery is very representative of the flat, open prairie or great plains terrain that is common from southwestern Canada all the way down into Texas.
